Jan and I continued our tradition of doing a snow camping trip in the Olympics to celebrate New Year's. This year we camped near Hurricane Hill. The inversion which had been in place for a few days made for a very comfortable night. On New Year's Day we skied a north facing run from the top of Hurricane Hill which was nice settled powder. Our second run was down the gladed, sunny SE face. This skied remarkably well given it had been in the sun all morning. Here's a link to a few more pictures:

On 1/3/16 Jan, Jeff, Blitz and I along with two new partners Emma and Leonie toured out the Obstruction Point road and skied a couple laps on the north aspect of Steeple Rock. Again we found nice settled powder which skied very well. It was a great conclusion to the daily holiday access period and some of the best sustained good snow conditions in the Olympics in a few years. Again, here are a few more Pictures:

Hell Gary,
I wonder if you wouldn't mind answering this question, Is the waterhole A-Frame gone for good?
Thanks,
john

At this point ONP does not have any plans to replace the hut that I am aware of. It was originally put in place by an avid group of Hurricane Ridge skiers. The justification for removing it in 2012 was " The structure did not comply with any standard building codes and was a liability the park could not continue to condone or invite the use of it by visitors."
It's removal was a great loss to the backcountry skiing community. I hope that at some point we can partner with ONP to find a way to replace it.
