Heading south, got a few days in the Oregon Cascades. Friday the 20th, Hood had seen 6-10 new the prior night, rained on and flash-frozen apparently to the summit. The 'up' was a ski crampon show for those who had them..the down, surprisingly smooth and fun, especially for NE and German natives..."used to that shit".

Saturday, some of us tossed the AT gear and went for a nordic spin out of Bachelor parking lot down the now closed Cascades Lakes road and up a sled track to the base of Bald Butte. Between some PM corning and the sled groomed track, that was very pleasant. Sunday the 22nd, we skinned up to the 7,600K level on the S edge of Bachelor resort. There was a rock-solid 10-15" base that was well runneled, and generally unpleasant. Photos from Hood on Friday the 20th.
Great writeup David! Thinking of heading down there for the long weekend. Did you summit Hood? Think it's ready for that sort of thing yet? Would you recommend Hood over Bachelor? I've never been to Bachelor...

I would recommend Hood over Bachelor right now, chiefly due to the fact that Bachelor has their uphill policy in effect (they are getting the mountain ready to open and aren't allowing uphill travel outside the Cinder Cone until operations are underway).....

Did you summit? Heading down there tomorrow to ski, but maybe take the skis off for a summit push. How did it look?

Day we skied, a week ago, we turned around at top of Palmer lift. Rain event had completely glazed the mountain. It looks like a bit of snow fell there several days ago, which might provide a few stashes between the hard stuff. Perhaps others have been up since and can comment.
