Knowing that this front was going to be rolling in quickly after about 4 AM, I made it to Stevens by about 9:00. Also knowing that ANY coverage on the front end would be slim, I took the Fischer Europa 99 skinny skis. Able to don skis about 300' vert above the lodge, on about 1/2" of slushy "snow". Access road made for consistent, although gloppy, climbing. Made it to about 400' below top of Skyline lift before turning it around. With skinny skis, floppy boots and virtually no snow coverage on top of the gravel road, slope angle was crucial. Wanted to be able to slide w/o snowplowing, thereby ruination for the bases of my antiques. Able then to traverse downhill across the slopes with associated kickturning, about 450' down to the plateau where there's a small pond. Many bumps, bruises, sloppy sitzmarks, and smiles. Skiing on the first day of the first month of my new ski season, especially on REAL snow (not an ice sheet...) was a real treat. The snow that was falling was quite nice. Get out there this week and get it on, bruthas and sistahs!!!
