RIP Carl Skoog. Ten Years. was created by hop
So hard to believe it's been ten years since his passing.

I made this tribute page five years ago

I posted a selection of 20 photos today in memory of Carl on my Facebook page.

The following link should take you there:

The photos are viewable by the public. I don't think you need a Facebook account to see them.

Confirming that you don't need F-book.

There are some world class photos there... some lines got skied on Carl Skoog's watch!

Great tribute to Carl. I wish I had the chance to get to know him better and also wish I had learned to appreciate the touring and ski mountaineering that you guys were doing back then. So much was going on around me that I didn't realize until a few years ago. It's a good reminder to savor the friendships and experiences that are going on around us every day.

There is a small site with a few of Carl's photos here:

alpenglow.org/carl-skoog/gallery/index.html

This site was created shortly after Carl died. At that time, some of Carl's industry friends donated some money in his memory and his family created something we called the Carl Skoog Memorial Fund as a way to use that money to support projects that we thought Carl would approve of.

Managing Carl's pictures has always been my responsibility. I have his entire collection (over 100,000 slides) at my house. Carl's collection is entirely slides. He died before digital photography really came of age, and he was just starting to experiment with digital at the time of his death. Carl was also very careful in managing access to his images. He was scratching out a living as a photographer, and he felt that he needed to be careful to protect his copyrights. I was very aware of this when he died, so I've never done a "big dump" of Carl's images online, thinking that it might be better to retain some control over the collection and use it to support his memorial fund.

I think it's probably time to change this approach, and in fact Carl's family is discussing this very subject right now. I think it would be nice to make more of Carl's images available for people to enjoy, and I think the memorial fund may have run it's course. But getting more of his images online would be my task, and I've got a lot of other stuff going on in my life.

I tend to take the long view, and feel that ultimately, through the various research, archival, and publication projects that I've taken on, Carl's story and images will shared more widely. Eventually...

If you ever you wanted to do a slide show somewhere (Feathered Friends, Fremont, etc.) you would certainly get a lot of people. I've seen shows with digital equipment and it really doesn't work as well (and the photographer said as much). Digital projection is great if you want to zoom in, but for just showing a picture, your average slide projector is way better than all but the most expensive digital projector. I would love to see those slides projected on the big screen, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
