To the Dark Side was created by Chamois
Alas, I've only been in alpine gear once and have been a long-time tele boarder.  But I just can't ignore how much lighter the AT gear has gotten without a similar evolution in tele.  That and a couple experiences with crust and watching my AT friends at least survive it with some semblance of pride left.

So I'm looking to put together an AT setup that is light and versatile.  Looking at the Dynafit boots/bindings -- I could mount these on my Coombbacks -- so any advice would be helpful on where to start.  Thanks.

Ha!  ;)
And another one bites the dust to the DARKSIDE   ;D

Sounds like you got the right gear figured out and already have boards in hand.
You might find some used Dynafit boots reasonable here or on other sites. It's rare you'll see used Dynafit binders under 250 frogpelts ($). Folks tend to keep them and recycle them onto new boards.

You made the right decision though -- Life will be nicer for you now, just like it did for AT Anonymous (In the video).

Ha! Awesome video.

Coombbacks with Dynafits versatile or should I be looking for another set of boards?

I guess it depends on who you talk to.
For me, I'd give the Coombacks a thumbs up for winter skiing.

I've tried a lot of combinations of gear in my 20 or so years of trial and terror in the backcountry and have kinda settled on two ski "go to" quiver of skis (along with another half a dozen or so pairs who's primary duty is to collect dust in my basement)...
one pair for winter skiing and the other for summer skiing.

For summer I go for skis that are bit thinner under foot and lighter than the Coombacks. Summer skiing for me is more about lighter loads and more summer corn, even more fun :).

I switched to AT from tele after 20+ yrs then convinced my wife to switch too. Can't beat AT for saving the knees (up and down), for releasibility and safety, and for light weight.

What is your boot size? If you are lucky enough to wear a MP 29 I could sell you TLT5 Mountains (with after market Palau touring liners), 182 cm Dynafit Stokes with Radical ST bindings, and Dynafit skins for $500, all in very good shape--see if you can beat that for pricing :-)

Good retort, David. Great tele skiing.

My first reaction was "those are certainly not the guys that caused the saying 'Tele = I can't ski that - its too steep'"

My second reaction was humm... Looking at the skiers, the gear and the clothing it appeared to me that we are looking and 20 to 30 year olds ripping it up on gear that was popular in, what the 60's to 80's?
It got me wondering what gear those same guys are skiing on now... if they are even still skiing  ::)

just sayin that a 220 lb package on 86's with, say NTN OutLaw , may have a much different day than 175lbs on 112's and Switchbacks..

La Sportiva Syborg boots are my current favorite light boots -- 800 grams and 75 degrees of ankle movement.   After freeheeling for some decades, I find them stiff enough.

Speed Turn's are very affordable.   The Speed SuperLight are significantly lighter, but still have adjustable release settings and and no problems with heel rotation while ascending.

Also I find B & D Leashes to be very handy. I like being able to remove my skiis from my feet during transistions without removing the leashes and risking an escaped ski.

Also "fixing the heel' doesn't automatically translate into easy skiing.   It took me a while to adjust to skiing with a fixed heel -- and I did a few somersaults during the adjustment period.    With tele you can "respond" to bumps into terrain by striding through, but with your heel locked, you more have to anticipate more than respond.  I reccomend doing some easy lift skiing at first.

Sadly, arthritis has developed in my dog's paws, I can only take her on easier hikes now -- she struggles too much in the snow now for it to be fun.

Have fun! I'm thinking about picking up a beater alpine setup(heavy) for resort skiing. Sometimes I don't want to think about every little nuance in my turn and just plow through the crud and bumps to get to the pow.

I tour with splitboarders so i'm not worried about gear weight as much.

Kinda -- looking at some used Cho Oyu skis to start. Gear questions can easily get off into the level of space shuttle components.

Having had a brief flirtation with the dark side, I totally related to Randy's comment on the transition from free heel to at and somersaults. My first outing on at was a gong show in difficult snow on Mount Seymour.

I made this drastic move after knee pains tele'ing when the orthopod said I had arthritis in the left knee and my tele days were over. So unwisely I listened to her and put Dynafits on my Coombacks, but kept one tele set up and did physio for my knee all summer. One day next season after my dark side experiences I tried my tele set up and, lo and behold, my knees didn't hurt for at least three hours. So now I'm back freeheel touring with the lightest NTN boots (Scarpa TX) and Freedoms. I realize I could drop some weight with at, and I do parallel a lot of the time now as I'm an old codger, but I'm happy to make the compromise for the ability to throw in tele turns when I want to :)

Cho Oyu's are a good choice. Those are my summer skis. Great ski. My current winter skis are the Huascarans.
