With decent luck lately seeking snow out of state, I finally made it over to try out Red Mtn Pass this weekend, just as a few fresh inches fell onto what's been a thin but skiable base in the San Juans. Bought a new little backcountry ski "atlas" at Ouray Mountain Sports and tailed some tight-lipped locals up a series of knobs on the west side of the pass across from Red 3. Bert, Darrin and a helluva big Bernese joined me. Man, when CO turns on the charm, I start thinking cheating thoughts...

Forgot to mention. If anyone gets down that way, drop in to the new Guide Garage in Ouray that Gary Ryan and Averill Doering just opened. A meeting / gathering / tuning / coffee place for bc skiers and climbers in the San Juans...
