Nov. 8th, 2005, Alpental - Dawn Patrol
« on: 11/08/05, 05:51 AM »

It was really nice !   Cool

~6-8" of fresh relatively light and fluffy snow over last weekend's much heavier snow.

Carter, Justin, and myself left the Alpental lot at ~6:20 am, and skinned-up to ~5,000-ft near "Gunmount" in Edelweiss Bowl.  Lower mountain fairly tracked-out for a closed ski area, but still plenty of freshies.  Skied nice freshies along the ridge back to Airplane Turn, then down upper Debbie's Gold and Sessel.  Snow stayed relatively light down to ~ 3,800-ft where it became a bit grabby.  Didn't hit any rocks, but still plenty of shrubbery poking through the snow on the lower slopes (though much better coverage than during Dawn Patrols here last Jan. and Feb.).  A few other skiers seen out at the Alp this morning as well!

Additional pics posted here

Snowpack notes: A quick pit on a southwesterly aspect near Gunmount revealed several layers in the ~2.5-ft deep snowpack at that location (probed snow depths of ~3-to-3.5' on the nearby slope); Tap test results: easy shear at ~6" deep (7 wrist taps); 2 shears at ~12" and ~14", respectively (both at 6 taps from elbow); layer at ~18" observed, but no failure noticed after 10 taps from the shoulder.

Nice nice!  I'm so, so pleased I couldn't pull it off this morning.  Fine work, all.

Let's see how the weather goes - they're talking 9000' freezing level and rain the next couple of days.

Sorry I missed you guys - 6:20 would have left me with about 2 hours of sleep. I started skinning at about 11:00 AM, followed a nice skin track up lower International to a little above the saddle, where it abruptly ended. Broke trail up Upper International in the fog which was quite laborious - not-even-close-to-wall-to-wall skins on Teledaddies would lose traction suddenly if angle got too steep or edges found harder snow below (cut for 84mm waist R:EX's) which made smashing my knee into the shovel of my skis fairly common.

Layers on International were well bonded, with a few point releases both natural and skier-induced but no slabbing. Snow depth on lower International about 4', upper part was closer to 5' with wind deposit.

It actually cleared up for most of the descent - turns were excellent on Upper Nash and not bad at all on lower, but beware of buried obstacles and streambeds lower down.

Daniel and Skip (and others)
Depending on weather, I could do a dawn patrol or all day Friday.

Way to get the goods there Cass.

Now that was some good Act-shon. Thanks to Wheep-A for organizing the entourage. Nice way to grease the groove in terms of getting the winter a started. I am totally sold on the dawn patrol phenomena.
Look forward to an even larger posse in the coming weeks.
