50 miles back country skiing in brilliant weather..
Summary: a 66 mile hut to hitch to hut excursion. Over 10,000 ft of elevation gain. We hitchhiked between Skinner and Bunkhouse. Paul preferred to ski down 3000 vertical ft in Vale rather than up 3000 ft of untrammeled trails and pursued his desire after day 3.
Huts stayed in were, in order, Skinner, Lee's Bunk House, Vance, Jackal, and Fowler-Hilliard. 6 days, 5 nights out, ending at Vale Pass. Rather cold first few days (below zero), but warmed up to a balmy 90 degrees in the sun by the end of the week! About 12 of the 50 total skied miles were untrammeled, with between 8 and 12 inches of powder. Actual route traveled is http://caltopo.com/map?id=4N74
Warm hospitality and friendly groups were found in this rugged, cold and beautiful area.
Happy New Year,
David
