Jan and I continued our tradition of spending New Year's Eve snow camping in the Olympics. This year we chose a summer picnic area west of the lodge which had a great sheltered southern exposure and quite luxurious amenities.
The inversion layer that moved in earlier in the day made conditions quite balmy for mid-winter. After setting up camp we had time for a late afternoon run near camp followed by a sunset dinner. Jan brought Christmas tree lights to decorate a small nearby tree and party favors to celebrate the new year. True to form, we were fast asleep long before the New Year arrived.
The next morning we toured out to Hurricane Hill and skied the SE aspect, conditions varied from spring-like at the top to breakable crust near the bottom.
