Posts Not Showing UP was created by blackdog102395
I recently noticed that posts aren't showing up other than the title. This happened to me when I posted looking for some resort boots. I had to edit my response and retype it to get it to post. It also happened recently when I PMed Silas about said boots. What's up?

This has been kind of an ongoing bug for a number of folks that seems to be related to a recent software upgrade we had to make. Working on resolution for it. It seems to be tied, perhaps, to editing/modifying a post and saving changes, but I'm not 100% on that. If folks can share their observation on when they've had it happen, that might help troubleshoot.

it's happened to me three different ways:

1) When I tried to post straight up in the Yard Sale regarding wanting to buy resort boots.

2) When I edited the post above it disappeared upon saving the changes.

3) When I PMed Silas. His message said he got my pm, but it had no content.

It has happened to me when I tried to edit a post immediately after I posted it and all of the text disappeared so I tried a new post directly below my edited blank post that also ended up blank.

It happened again the next day when I tried to edit another post that had been up for a day.

happened to me when i tried to post about rainier rates going up.
i was copying text from notepad and when i would hit preview it would show blank. i screwed around with it for 10 minutes or so, didnt seem much rhyme or reason but certainly pasting a block of text in wouldn't go no matter what. it was weird/buggy almost like a space or a certain character was making it stumble and show blank.

Happening for me when I send a PM using Safari on a Mac. Chrome on a Mac seems to work fine.

New posts to forums using Safari/Mac seem to work fine.

Thanks for all your help admining the site!

Here are two posts where you can post and edit away where few people will tend to see them (almost nobody reads the route-condition photo forums anymore)

www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboardi...ex.php?topic=16871.0

I haven't been able to trigger anything yet.

Lately I've been able to create posts, but not edit them.

When I try to edit, the post disappears. This seems to happen with large posts more than it does with small ones.

I just edited this short post without problems.

Then I edited this post a little more (adding some text) and the board ate it.

I've reduced the size of the post a little bit. Let's see what happens now...

Okay, that worked.

Next, I'm going to post the same bunch of characters, then edit the post slightly.

I'll do this in a new post (following this one)

If my theory is correct, the edited post will be eaten.

Yup, the post got eaten.

I posted that block of characters with an opening line saying "Testing 1 2 3".

Then I tried to edit the line to say "Testing 1 2 3 4 5" and the post disappeared.

Interestingly, I also tried to edit my last short post, and it got eaten, but I retrieved it using the Back button.

So, I think the size of the post is not a hard and fast criteria for being eaten.

Those of you who've had their posts eaten, are you always logged-in on the computer you are trying to post from? Have you tried logging out and logging back in again, or posting from a private session / incognito window?

I did some experimentation with post length last night and couldn't get the board to eat my posts. But I've had difficulty with long-living sessions to the point where I've had to manually clear my cookies from turns-all-year.com and log-in again.

Thanks for the continued reports, all. Trying to figure this out. It's all related to a (required) back-end software upgrade. Other solutions are in the works, eventually.

FWIW My posts, even with editing in the compose screen, show up fine unless I use 'Preview', in which case they are lost.

I was trying to reply to this thread to say the images weren't showing up:
www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboardi...ex.php?topic=32998.0

When I put the error Google threw at me in a quote anywhere in my post, it disappears. When I remove the quote, my post shows-up.

EDIT: Holy crap, it has to do with smart quotes. You know, the fancy versions of ' and " that software like Word uses. If you put either of those in your post, POOF!

Okay, I've discovered some more things. Specifically, that the board "eats" posts when you use characters outside of the ASCII encoding set. Which is bad, because the Internet runs on UTF-8

For those of you who aren't even certain about what a "jay peg" is, character encoding sets like ASCII and UTF-8 are just different ways of encoding all the characters that exist around the world. ASCII is extremely limited, using only 1 byte per character. It can only encode 128 different characters. There are certainly a lot more than that in the world, so Unicode was invented and with it came a whole bunch of different encoding schemes. The bottom line is that some characters (typically Chinese/Japanese) take up to 4 bytes (32 bits) to encode. But characters which can be encoded in ASCII don't need that much space, so there's no reason not to use a variable-length encoding scheme where some of the first "code point" hints at how many of the following bytes the character occupies. Now that I've slaughtered that explanation, you should know that Wikipedia has a good article on UTF-8 that you can read if you want a better description: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8

Interesting. I just tried to reproduce the error, which I've never had, in a test thread ( www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboardi...ndex.php?topic=32727 ) without success.

Is there a particular way in which the UTF-8 characters need to be entered/a browser configuration for UTF-8 that might matter?

Quick introduction--I'm Matt, a web developer and long time TAY reader. I've been helping Marcus out with the software upgrade and troubleshooting the resulting bugs. Thanks everyone for the observations in this thread and the patience with this very frustrating bug.

Okay, I've discovered some more things. Specifically, that the board "eats" posts when you use characters outside of the ASCII encoding set.

This looks like it may have been the problem, and has now been fixed. I'm not sure yet if there were any other circumstances causing the board to eat posts (I haven't been able to reproduce any), but non-ASCII characters will no longer cause the board to eat posts. I'm hoping this has completely fixed the bug. If anyone still has posts disappear, any observations would be much appreciated.
