The snow levels for the next week are all "ABOVE 8,000 FEET". It seems pretty cold this morning in Portland. WHAT IS GOING ON! I though inversions only happen when its clear. I read somewhere that temps drop 5 degrees for every thousand feet. If it's 60 degrees in town then it should be a LITTLE colder up there. I guess Bush don't like snow lovers either.

Temperatures drop 5 degrees F. per 1000' in dry air. In moist air, the drop is 3.5 degrees per 1000'.

So, if it is 60 degrees at sea level, it should be 28 degrees colder at 8000'. That's what the lady said!

Actually, the above figures are for still air. The more the air mass is moving, the more it tumbles and mixes, causing the delta to lessen. Commonly, in a warm front, I can leave see level at 50 degees F. and arrive at 5000' to temeratures of 40 degrees F.
