June 24, 2014, Mt. Hood, North Side butter
« on: 05/27/14, 11:33 PM »

Last Saturday, we found very crowded conditions on the North Side of Mt. Hood because, well, there were two of us.  We had to fight through some brutal holiday traffic to score some amazing morning views of the mountain from the Upper Hood River Valley.

After hiking through the Dollar Lake Burn, we finally broke out above treeline into the alpine, where we also found nobody.

After gawking at the Coe Glacier and the Elliot Headwall, we rode absolutely perfect buttery corn snow from 8,100' down to about 6,000' right around noon.  We had a hard time relaxing with all the people threatening to poach our line.

Then we skinned back up to the ridge in softening snow and dropped back down into the trees on the way back to the car.

With the busy holiday weekend, that place is skied out.  Maybe next year.

What elevation did you hit snow? About this time last year we didn't get onto snow until the Timberline Trail, but previous years before the Dollar Lake fire we were on snow a mile or so below the T-Line Trail. It seems that the snow melts out earlier due to the burn.

And I really like the line off of the east side of Barrett Spur, it's nice and steep.

Nice pics too.

I think we hit snow at around 5500'.  Those lines off the east side look excellent!
