March 22nd, 2014, Party at the Slot Couloir
« on: 03/23/14, 10:44 AM »

Cruised it up to the Slot via the Phantom Slide with a couple friends and a million other people/dogs. Can't blame them-- great weather, stable snow, and nice long March days. Tough sledding going up the initial part of the Phantom, particularly on a split. Switched around between ski crampons, regular crampons, and just normal skinning. Once up on the shelf, skins were just fine.

The Couloir was a little icy up top and a little tracked out, but the snow from last Wednesday is still hanging on pretty good in there. Once past the pinch, there was plenty of freshies for slashers and toe-side hand drags.

We came out of Thunder Basin via the usual notch and proceeded down skier's right of the Phantom. Once again, I was happy I threw in the crampons, but my two friends were fine kicking in steps in their snowboard/ski boots. The snow in the trees heading down was better than expected. And, we managed to avoid getting cliffed-out at any point. Bonus!
