High Campbell no more was created by pipedream
Crystal's ski patrol got that deep instability to react today. The resulting slide from the top of the Throne cleared out the bottom of the High Campbell chair. I suppose it's derailed for the last time (and maybe that upgrade "a few years away" will come much sooner).

Pics from Crystal Mountain's FB page :

RIP, Chair 6

It only figures that less than a week after they built their first jump line since the 90s a controlled slide ripped out the chair to their premier freeriding terrain. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions...

I guess this is proof that something good can come from an avalanche  ;)

In the last video and pics that Crystal has posted I've noticed a fair amount of what appears to be brown dirt on the slide path.  Does anyone know what layer these slides are occurring on?  Is is something earlier than the Jan layer we've been talking about?  Are we sliding all the way down to bare ground in some cases?

RIP chair 6.

My ass spent many a great day cradled by those chairs.  It was usually a slow, cold ride and not very comfortable especially with a pack on, but I always enjoyed getting to know my fellow pow hounds that I would ride with on a busy day or the quiet solitude, rest and awesome views on a slow day.

I think forever more March 10 should be declared a national ski holiday known as High Campbell day.

South back will definitely be a whole new adventure.

Did the snow stake survive? I see the last posted time was seconds before the blast.

Very truely sad :(. Glad I got a couple last nice runs with Silas on Friday...That was probably the start of the big slide...chair 6 was running faster than it has all season - almost like the good old days - probably big voretex torque thing going on twisting all of Campbell Basin. ;)

I too have fond memories of that chair; riding it on the first day it was open, jumping off at the low point above the cliffs in a big snow year because the chair was stalled and I was going to be late for teaching my class, a weekday in April when we skied Brain Damage 5 consecutive times, and many many stormy rides up for face shots on the way down.

Much appreciated for the comparison pics. Please keep em coming. With the foggy vis and obliterated landmarks it really helps to get an idea of what happened and where.

Umm, what's a jump line?

Also, as opposed to stepping down to the base it appears the dirt came from the upper stand of trees where the pack is shallow over a terrain feature, then dragged down to make the brown streaks <insert obvious joke here>.

It's an inefficient path that snowboarders use to get to the bottom of the hill where periods of downhill (efficient) travel are punctuated with uphill features (inefficient) that lead to varying amounts of air under the travellers feet.  Sometimes aerial manuevers are performed that serve no purpose to improving the downhill travel.  Laughter and smiles usually follow.

Skiers adopted the activity after seeing how much fun snowboarders had and soon after "slopestyle" became a new Olympic sport.

random factoid for those that don't know.... High Campbell used to be one of the chairs at Yodelin and was moved to Crystal after Yodelin shut down.

Walking the ridge requires passing through a backcountry gate. Silas' caption says the picture was taken before the gate opened.

Traversing across the basin does not require passing through a gate. The traverse is open whenever Chair 6 is open. It's amazing to think of how much that slope has been skied during the season, and it still broke loose.

I think it would be awesome to get somebody from the Crystal Mountain avalanche patrol to talk at NSAW about what they look for when fighting a deep slab problem like this. It might provide a good heads-up for backcountry skiers thinking about early spring conditions.

They obviously had a pretty good clue that this was possible.  Maybe based on the Employee Housing slide they released the previous day.

Hadn't heard the term Jump Line before either. Correct me if I'm wrong but from what Jason4 says I'm thinking its a series of jumps/features built from piled up snow for doing aerial tricks or what ever. I did notice the jump line(?) last week under Forest Queen that hadn't been built there for some years. Aerial acrobatic series jumps were first used around 1971 by the original freestyle skiing circuit sponsored by Chevy. I saw them in Sun Valley and Vail back then. There will be a reunion and recognition of these original "hotdog" skiers, (Wayne Wong et, al) in Park City during Ski Hall of Fame week ~April 1-6.

Too bad about chair 6, RIP

What? Skiers had fun before snowboarding was popular? ;D

I'm going to stick with my belief that if it weren't for splitboarding then backcountry monoskiing would never have caught on.
