August 7, 2005, Greater Muir Metropolitan Area
« on: 08/08/05, 03:23 PM »

With a desire for August turns, but without the gusto to get up north this weekend, we took a collective deep breath and headed to Muir Sunday.  Anyone who knows me knows I'm a real conditions snob; if the snow isn't pristine, I don't like to go.  I mean it needs to be good.  Real good.  Given recent reports, I wasn't terribly hopeful.

I woke feeling tired.  After picking up the ladies, we buzzed down to Renton to meet the gentlemen.  After far too much messing around at the grocery store, all five of us put tire to road and beat it to Paradise.  As expected, there were hoards of tourists in parking lot area.  One drove up and offered me some candy if I got into his Chevy.  Ron J. was out for a hike on Unicorn, it turned out.  After some chit chat, we ditched Ron and started up the Alta Vista trail. It was 11:00am.

Consistent with prior weeks' reports, we hit continuous snow somewhere in the Pebble Creek vicinity.  The snow had set up the night before despite the 14,500' freezing levels.  By skinning through RMI group huddles and other crafty, time-saving maneuvers, we were able to overcome the herd en route to the Anvil Rock contour.  Word on the snowfield was that anything above 9,000' held inverted moguls, so we aimed our sights low.  Besides, it was a lovely, lovely day and worth the stop to look around.  After some lunch we retreated, more or less retracing our uptrack.  The first 600' offered relatively rougher terrain, though was still surprisingly accommodating for August (especially this August).  Anything below ~8,300' was brilliant, albeit dirty--at least where we found ourselves.  I've certainly had worse.  We skied down to ~7000', and I think I speak for the group when I say it was fantastic nearly the whole way - 1-3" of corn over solid.

In all fairness, I could see how others may not have had a similar experience yesterday.  For example, one can see suncups on Muir from the parking lot at Paradise.  With some selectivity and a bit of luck, however, there's still some sweet turns to be had if you want them badly enough.  Yessir, it was a good day, as illustrated by El Weepay:

Indeed  Wink  At least our ~1,600+ vertical ft of skiing in the "Greater Muir Metropolitan Area" was much easier earned than the late July turns  [packing a 25-pound inflatable raft for 7 miles to cross Blanca Lake and ski, uh, 'pristine' snow  Grin   ]

Well-worded report, sir.
