Four of us met at the 65th St P&R and left Seattle at a reasonable time.  We arrived at the White River campground under cold, cloudy skys and started up the trail to Sunrise.  Shortly after leaving, it started to rain, and as we got higher turned to snow.  It was snowing quite heavily when we hit the trail junction, but the wind was light.  We walked along the trail to the ridge between First and Second Burroughs (?  the two closest to Sunrise), skinned around in the fog for a while and found our way over to a shortish snowfield (~400 vf) on the Burroughs closest to Sunrise with 3-4 inches of powder about where the cross is here.  We linked snow patches all the way back to the meadows near Sunrise camp, which were now covered in 6" of new snow, enough to (carefully) ski down the gravel trail.  It was snowing quite hard at this point, and we all arrived back at the car soaked.

I haven't been skiing at sunrise before, but there didn't look to be much snow.  The meadows are nearly completely melted out (or will be after the new snow melts again).  From what we could see through the fog, the north facing slopes down towards Berkeley Park were completely melted out.  Couldn't see anything else in the fog.

Lastly, when we arrived back in Seattle, my car was gone.  Stolen during the day between 7am and 7pm.  As of Monday afternoon it hasn't been recovered yet.  A heads up for anyone who makes it a habit to meet there in the morning.  It isn't a particularly nice car (10+ year old Ford Escort, with lots and lots of miles).  But it has faithfully gotten my friends and me to the mountains and back many, many times over the last 5 years.
Matt:

thanks for the report.  i'm glad you got out for some turns, despite the weather.  and sorry to hear about your car.  i hope it gets recovered.  Ned_Flanders got his car broken into at the 65th P&R when we left it there last year.  missing were his CD player and CD collection.  now i avoid leaving a vehicle there.

Yikes about the car.  I leave mine there all the time, and I figured it's a pretty safe place, because there seems to be strong police presence there. (In fact, there was a cop driving around there at 4:30am on Saturday).

Maybe the all the police is a sign that it's not a good spot...

My Brother-in-Law was trying to climb from Steamboat Prow and turned around in 12" of new powder (sans skis). He said there was 8" at the base of the Inter Glacier.

I've had the tabs stolen off my license plate at the 65th P&R.  guess the thieves realized that the registration tab was the most valuable thing on my p.o.s. subaru

sorry to hear about the car theft...hope that it shows up soon.

Sorry to hear about the car.  I hear the Sunrise road is supposed to open this weekend, but it doesn't sound like there will be much of a Sunrise chute-fest this year.  Does anyone else have any reports of conditions up there?

The loss of Matt's car is a bummer, and just plain old disappointing.

Some pics from this trip can be seen here:

Bummer about the car -- man I hate that.
Nice job with the pics, Phil... hope some of the snow's still up there.

Well, the police just found the car in the University district.  As far as I can tell, it is completely undamaged and the only thing missing from inside is about $5 in change.  All my 10 year old tapes are still there, plus the garden tools.   :)  Anyway, hope there is still some snow left for everyone up at Sunrise this weekend.  Make some turns for me (can't make it this weekend).

Matt:  i'm glad they found your car, and it's not damaged.  :)
