August 4th, 2013, Alpental, reason....unknown

We set out to get our August turns in on an abbreviated timeline. Over the last few weeks I had glimpsed the lower section of Upper International from Snoqualmie Mountain and Guy Peak and figured it was worth a shot. That being said if you have the time I would certainly recommend going elsewhere. We knew it wasn't going to be great going in but the snow was ok, cupped but manageable.

The real issue with the adventure was the hike up. Armstrong was fair but once we got to chair 2 all bets were off. Thick brush and poor footing for the first ~350 vert, with no trail to speak of. We ended up heading up Gunmount to Kante which was the lesser of 4 evils. We hung out on the chair for five minutes or so before descending several hundred feet over loose rock and very firm snow/ice to skiable terrain.

All in all we probably managed to get 10-15 comedy turns in before the heat seeking rock met me at the bottom. Hiked down lower Nash dragging skis along the boulders......well......now I know. Tons of effort for what it was but hey, I'm counting it. Video courtesy of my buddy Marc. To be fair he advised against this nonsense haha.

Huge madness points for a post with "August" and "Alpental" in the title - definitely an attention-getter.  Thanks for the pics.

Excellent first post, too!

As for scaling Denny Mtn w/o snow, this seems like an appropriate summary: http://www.hikingwithmybrother.com/2010/09/denny-mountain-trail-alpental-ski.html

Well done! 6 turns for multiple hours of effort. Reminds me of many an August and/or September patch discoveries. Keep up the streakin'...

Great first post!  The ski looked completely worthy to me.  I've hiked further to ski less Smiley
