March 9, 2013 - Rock-Howard-Mastiff (YARHMTR)
« on: 03/10/13, 09:51 AM »

There have been several good TRs about the Rock-Howard-Mastiff traverse recently. See this and this and especially this.

Two friends and I skied the traverse yesterday with great conditions. As Forest McBrian wrote last week, the route is skiable from car to car. Most people were booting up the lower Rock Mountain trail, but it was also skiable with harscheisen. We had a few tiny portages on the route. They're likely to increase rapidly as the snow melts.

There were a lot of people in the area yesterday. We saw a party of three and another of two on the ascent and encountered a party of five on the summit of Rock Mountain. We traveled near the party of five most of the day. I don't know if the other two parties attempted the traverse. There were more cars at the base when we returned.

Our party took 8-1/2 hours from car A to car B.  Conditions were good and we were moving well, so that's probably a faster than average time for this route. Snow was variable, but offered good travel and some pretty good skiing as well. On balance, I'd say conditions were just about ideal. A GPS was handy for following the Merritt Lake trail down to the highway.

Other TRs have shown the scenery pretty well. Here's a ski shot taken high on Mount Howard:

Ideal travel and ski conditions, bumper to bumper. Still cool enough to ski like winter but the sun angle felt a bit like spring. A few landscapes for inspiration. Great tour!

Nice photos! I love the shot of all the parallel tracks coming off the summit. What does YARHMTR stand for?

My question is why are all these skiers trampling over dogs?  Wink

We were the 5 person party out front.  I really can't imagine getting better conditions for this tour.  Although now this rig is a trade route, with good reason, it is a really stellar outing!
