Wow! What a bunch of blooming idiots! Everyone is just kinda standing around, taking their time, and are woefully unprepared for any/the incident at hand. What an embarrassment! So glad nobody got hurt! Damn! Too bad they shut off the comments, 'cause they would be a blistering!

I didn't realize the the buried guy was suppose to dig himself out if others don't care to help or have cold hands, or no shovel handle...

I'm trying to imagine what was going through the victim's head while his buddies were farting around as much as they seemed to be.

I'd would like to hope, I'd be better focused during an actual rescue -- but my real hope is that I never find out how big a dork I am doing a search for and digging out a ski buddy :/

it's a good thing he wasn't completely buried or else he'd surely be dead.

Be a dork, I don't care. You can wear hockey pajama onesies, a helmet with a beak and loud green ski pants if you ever need to use your rescue skills when I'm around.

But remember that real buddies don't share beacons, and leave your gloves on when your digging in snow.

That was hard to watch. It's another good reminder to practice with your partners.

Well, they weren't completely unprepared -- the helmet cam worked. I wonder if maybe they might consider trading one of their transceivers for a shovel handle. I don't think these folks could have effected a transceiver search if needed.

Totally unbelievable. Lucky. So lucky.

Worth reading the whole SAC writeup, which seems to have come from an incident investigation.
It includes a pit profile and second video of the scene done the next day, www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/node/3156

Awesome to get a response from one of the folks in the party. It's way too easy to armchair quarterback this stuff, especially when the mistakes and poor decisions are obvious. Thanks for sharing that Bird.

That is really hard to watch but the incident report is worth reading. The trip leader put himself in the cross hairs so that guys like me can continue to learn and apply the finer points of backcountry travel. I respect his candor. In 1986 I triggered a corn snow avalanche cutting across the top of a similar feature while skiing alone in the BC. The result was lost gear but nothing worse. I didn't know then that corn snow, wet snow sets up like concrete in seconds. Bottom line is I have always been terrified of the risk associated with our sport knowing that it only takes one tiny error to turn a dream day into a nightmare. I appreciate the forums and have been reading them year round since before I was a member here. A commitment to continued learning, attention to detail, patience, humility and the ability to abort are essential characteristics to cultivate in this sport to be sure.

The phenomena related to resort skiers venturing into the BC with the "it could never happen to me syndrome". For each member to not be fully equipped with avy gear is deplorable. That and letting the guy sit buried for so long was mind blowing.
