December 19, 2012, LCC Utah
« on: 12/19/12, 06:06 PM »

After an awesome week of skiing in WA I packed up and headed to Utah last weekend, ultimately aiming for being in Vegas to see UW play Dec. 22nd.  The last three days have been reasonably stormy (over 2' of new snow) and the lift served skiing at Alta did not disappoint.  The storm broke last night and today delivered cold, crisp bluebird conditions.

Morning light in LCC:

Took a mellow warm up run here to start the day:

Skinning in this type of weather was a real treat; it's awesome when breathable fabrics actually work!

The wind did some cool things to the snow on certain aspects:

Our second lap down Holy Toledo was the highlight of the day:

Cardiac Ridge was prime for the taking:

I missed the memo it was figure 8 training day:

One more day in LCC, then Zion en route to Vegas.  Stoked to get back to the PNW post Xmas to enjoy the leftovers of the recent storm cycle up North!

here is my dumb question of the night:

are the upper mountains' snow unstable or do people in utah have something against skiing from the summit?

I think it is a combination of:

1.  Avi risk/danger.
2.  Thin snowpack (only 60-70" and tons of rocks lurking).
3.  Laziness - it's hard to skin to the top.

Thanks for the quick response.  Kind of figured, it just looks so nice sitting at home on my couch.  Looks awesome either way.

By the way, I like the double helix in the second to last picture.

This is my favorite trip report in a while!  So excited to visit my brother in SLC and ski bluebird Wasatch powder!  I keep coming back to drool over your photos.

Agreed. And to that end:
Dear Skier8484,
The internet (aka, me) would like to formally request that you upload somewhere and link a highest-possible rez version of the first Holy Toledo shot (the white room pic) so that the internet (aka, me) can make it a gorgeous seasonal wallpaper with which to distract ourselves at work.

Sincerely,
The Internet

Thankfully you left all that spooning crap in Utah.. It's all aesthetic and purty and stuff but i prefer the chaos and individuality displayed in a nice gang banged slope.
