Alpine Snow Report for Saturday Apr 16, 2005 @ 09:27 AM

Yes, it's true....65 cm in 24 hours. It's February, isn't it? :).
Now open for another weekend: April 15th - 17th

New Snow 24 Hrs
65 cm / 26 "
New Snow 48 Hrs
73 cm / 29 "
Mid Mtn Base
299 cm / 118 "
Snow Conditions
Machine Groomed / Bring Snorkel!
Today's Temperature
High: 0 C / 32 F Low: -4 C / 24.8 F
Current Weather
overcast and snowing with light SE winds

Unfortunately for those of us on the mainland, the big dump is at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island, while WA and OR ski areas are getting rained on. I've wanted to ski Mount Washington for years, but haven't made it out there in winter. It's notable for being on an island ("ski an island in the Pacific" was one of their slogans) and for its freakishly large snowfalls. Also, it's quite a scenic and craggy mountain which reaches timberline despite its very modest 5215 ft (1588 m) height.

The story on Vancouver Island pretty much epitomizes this season in the Pacific NW, as that was the region hardest hit by the Pineapple Expresses and subsequent drought, and it has staged the most remarkable comeback since then. As of March 15, Mount Washington's snowdepth had dropped to 0" and the ski area had been closed for weeks (normal depths are about 100" by then). A couple feet of snow finally fell by March 20, but warmer temps soon eroded that and the ski area closed for the season on March 25, generously offering its season pass holders a free extension to next season. Daily snow reports ended, too.

Then the monster dumps began, as the base shot up to 83" by the next report on April 6 (including 24" overnight), and the ski area was forced to reopen last weekend. Heavy snow continued this week, capped by today's dump which brought the base up to a surprising 118" (more than Whistler, Baker, Paradise, Timberline, etc.). Starting from 0" on March 15, this snowdepth implies a total snowfall of over 200" during the past month. Amazing.
Amar,

You've probably already seen this site, but I figured I'd post it anyways...snow depth figures throughout BC

wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/rfc/river_forecast/pillows.htm

Some of those charts show that big 'comeback' that the snowpack has had up there.

Check out the burnt bridge creek snow pillow...looks like the area around Bella Coola has collected a massive snowpack this season.
