While Schweitzer is struggling to build a pack, Stagleap is ready and willing in the alpine and down into the trees. I've always wondered why there are not more posts about this place. I guess people think that no one else knows about it. Or perhaps its that it is more than an hour from Seattle...

See  some of you in the westside next week for some deep snow work.

damn I want to see the pics on facebook... but the link doesn't work

Could be because I don't know anyone who calls it Stagleap Pass.  It's Salmo Pass to me, and all my buds who ski there.  I grew up in Bonners Ferry.  Perhaps Salmo Pass is local nomenclature.  Does is say Stapleap on the highway signage?

Otherwise, you are right.  Very few TAY folks post from the interior ranges, outside of stories of hut trips.  I think most of the focus is the coast ranges.

Agreed.  I learned to backcountry ski there in the late '70's.  Salmo-Creston Pass was what we called it.  I loved the skiing there by the way.  When I am retired and have full winters to ski I plan on returning.  Wonderful area.

So is this the same or different from Kootenay Pass?

edit: nevermind, google shows me that Kootenay Pass is in the stagleap.

awesome website for that area:

and if anyone in the greater spokane area wants to go skiing let me know.  moved here in sept and always looking for partners.

Thanks for the report, this is at the top of my ski list this year, glad to hear there is a good base building, from what I have read, early skiing is known to be good.  I would love have the latest snow reports if you are up there skiing.

Hey Kevino! Nice to see someone else from the Spokane area on TAY! Always looking for touring partners, as well. Have not done anything north of the border (really wanting to do the Kootenays(Selkirks), though), but regularly do the Selkirks, Bitterroots, and CDA/ST Joe Mtns. Will have to hook up and get some goods this winter. My email is: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Doesn't work for me, either... and I'm logged into FB.

The Pass is called all those names. I just prefer the actual name of the park because it implies the jumping off and is generally more bad ass that Selmo Pass of Kootaney Pass.

Here are two more pictures from Dec 1., I just figured out how to post them.

Man, that is some sweet looking terrain (from the shot looking down at the pass)!! Thanks for posting the pics! I have to get up there!
