july 10-11 2012, mt. rainier edmunds headwall

working through this past weekend i constantly watched perfect weather come and go each day. i knew people were going to be getting after it and i also had a feeling the weather would be gone by the time i had a few days off. monday morning i read the trip report form the mowich face and was excited to hear about good conditions, though anxious about whether or not the weather would hold for the next few days. as the day went on the forecast improved and became perfect for some high corn.

the full story here

tuesday morning four of us left to ski the edmunds headwall. we camped at the ridge around 8500' and saved the rest for the next day. we left camp at 4:45 and endured the choss down to the glacier. the crossing of the n mowich is super strait forward as well as the edmunds glacier. the bergschrund at the bottom of the headwall is still crossable on the left although will melt out soon forcing some steep volcanic rock climbing or a superhuman jump. there is barely any ice on the face and the snow is almost completely rock free.

two of us stopped at 12500' while mike and i continued to the top of the mowich face and took our third nap of the day at 13,500. we passed on the slog to lib cap and slept more instead, not wanting to deal with boot top mush. skiing the face was perfect with a few bumpy turns up high then corn until we put skins on to get back up to camp. the snow never got too soft or grabby for the entire descent. i am still giddy about it and will be for a long time.

anyway, here are a few pictures from the ski...
