Hoping to find something similar to the Inter Glacier Powder we skinned up the southside of Hood originally intending to ski the hidden Illumination Rock bowls southwest of Illumination Rock. Lower mountain visibility on arrival was fine but above 10k was going in and out of clouds. We stopped at the top of Triangle Moraine at 9600’ to transition and descend west towards IR. A few minutes later we were engulfed in clouds w/ intermittent gruapel. We waited for about 45 minutes to see if the light would improve, which it only slightly did, and then descended towards IR. The snow was very dense, grabby, wind-affected “powder” - it skiied okay. After descending past IR we decided against skiing the IR bowls due to poor visibility and snow, and angled back towards the Palmer.

Skied Zig Zag on 5-27-12 and found very smooth conditions.  Unfortunately the weather blew in on our descent and we were forced to ski 25-50 turns and wait for the next sucker hole to open up. Not the 3800 feet of wide open arcing turns I imaged on the ascent, but all in all a good way to spend a Sunday.

I planned on doing the same route on 5/25. The 30 mph steady winds led to a quick change in direction at silcox hut. Plenty of sun on lower slopes but above silcox was in cloud bank. I got  some nice but shallow untracked powder going back down. Too much sun effect on the powder so not worth the second lap on a slope that is not very exciting. I did appreciate powder turns at the end of May.
