TAY hero

This article describes a certain TAYer's involvement in the Wallace Falls rescue:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2018258047_rescue22m.html

Well done, sir.

URL is text and not hyperlinky.  And agreed, well done and spicy.

Highlight from the story:
Quote
A sheriff's helicopter lowered two rescuers about 200 yards downstream Saturday evening. After several attempts to swing in under the overhang, the rope sawed against the rock edge and snapped. Rescuer Oyvind Henningsen fell into the water, but a safety rope held by a second rescuer prevented him from going over the next section of Wallace Middle Falls.

Pretty amazing to survive a rope snapping like that and come out unscathed, it looks like the backup systems are well designed.

By the way, Oyvind's last name was misspelled in that story both in the paper and online, so I emailed the author and the online version has now been fixed, and they will run a correction in the paper tomorrow. Apparently, the Snohomish County Sheriff's office had his name spelled incorrectly on the list that they gave to the press, which is surprising since he has been on many search and rescue missions with them over the past several years, and is the current president/chair of Everett Mountain Rescue.

This story on KING5 has video of Oyvind speaking at a news conference:
http://www.king5.com/news/local/Rescuers-talk-about-saving-teen-from-top-of-waterfall-152382235.html

That story has his name misspelled 3 different ways (!), Henningston and Hennington in the text, plus Henningtson in the video, none of which match the misspelling on the sheriff's list (Hennigson). LOL! I guess Norwegian names are hard to spell correctly! (and I need to email Allen Schauffler now too.)

Joedabaker: I only wish I had the skill and dedication to help in a situation like this. Definitely not this Andy. Cheers to the rescuers!

Can't see any pics, but I am guessing it's Andy Hill?... edited. My guess was wrong! but Mr. Hill does his fair share for SAR, but for King county. Thanks Becky.

Nice work guys!

Oyvind is the man.  He spends soooo much of his free time training and working on rescues.  Nice work Oyvind and all the rescue folks involved.

All that training and practice seems like it payed off, breaking a main line, and being checked by the backup, and that boy safely home, all in a long day/nights work, very impressive.

Thanks Joedabaker & Becky. Funny how things can come full circle. I joined SAR because of this TAY community after the Crystal search.

In my mind TAY's finest hour.

Thanks to everyone involved in saving this kid.  I got a little choked up watching the video.

Well done Oyvind and team. All the SAR people have my admiration but it is the volunteers than stand out in my mind. Donating so much time for training and the rescues is truly admirable.

Just to be pedantic,  If you're lowered from above aren't you on toprope, not lead?   Wink
I read the Seattle Times article; sounded like a real-life version of the Clint Eastwood stunt scene in The Eiger Sanction, only not done for the camera, but for a fellow human.
Bravo!

that's cute Mac, up or down, in a rescue, you are on lead, the second rope is the belay...
Oyvind and Andy and your whole team, you are SUPERSTARS!!!
