Friday, May 11, Mt. St. Helens
« on: 05/07/12, 02:01 PM »

Anyone interested in Mt. St. Helens this Friday, May 11th from Marble Snopark?

I live in NE Portland and will probably go up as early as possible on Friday (pick up permit ~6am and be on the track shortly afterward).

As a relatively new transplant to the PNW, I've only been to St. Helens once, last year, when I got turned around by rain about 2/3 of the way up in January. I'm fit, but like to go fairly slow on the up and down with tele, as I prefer to spend time enjoying the day. Of course, if you just want to share the skin up and ditch me to bomb back down the mountain, I fine with that as well (assuming that conditions would be safe to separate).

Note: I do not have formal avy training or much mountaineering experience. That said, I carry (and know how to use) the standard safety equipment: beacon, probe, shovel, and brain. I'm mellow, don't like to take unneeded risks and I expect the same of the people I'm with.

Anyone interested? 415-309-4631 or skycrawford@gmail.com

Can't make Friday, but if you can swing Sunday on St Helens, this is the day we celebrate our Mothers by skiing the mountain while wearing dresses.  There are lots of people and it is a good time.  The only requirement is that you wear a dress, and maybe carry up an ironing board in honor of your mother!

Ahhh, The annual Mother's Day trip! That's one that I need to do someday (maybe this year)! Thanks for the invite Animal...

I've already got my permit for Friday, so it's on. If I have enough energy and can get away on Sunday (my mother-in-law will be visiting from Seattle), I'll see you all up there on Sunday. By the way, what time are you departing from Marble Mountain?

My Friday trip looks like I might be going solo. Trying to decide if I want to go up Thursday evening and camp. Also, I can't decide what route I want to do, as I'm either considering the standard Swift route or approaching via the West Side (Butte Camp) route alla TAYers Boot and jcocci: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=20633.0 .

My hesitancy with the West Side are dealing with the snowmobiles, being solo, and possibly not getting the perfect sun angle for the harvest. Regarding snowmobiles, I don't really mind a few of them, but would rather not have to deal with a dozen or more buzzing around me.

Any suggestions from the other TAYers?

I would imagine it could be pretty thick with sleds this weekend.
