BC skiing in Virginia? was created by kam
i'm in Virginia, Richmond to be exact, and just visiting. does anyone know about backcountry skiing around the area? i've managed to locate the four "major" resorts within a 3-hours drive from Richmond, but i'm curious about the BC situation here. does it even exist? any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

-kam

Hi Kam,

I have heard that there is some skiing around the Timberline ski resort in WV as well as the Dolly Sods wildnerness area (on a good year). Never experienced it myself though.

Michael

Kam-

Check out the Mt. Rogers area near Damascus in SW Virginia. Greyson Highlands State Park is fabulous. The only tracks will be your own. The best access is off VA SR 58. You will likely have to ski all the way up to Woburn Ridge but it would make a great 2-3 day tour and some nice turns would be had on the way back down. Snow in the southern Appalachians is a real hit and miss thing so if it snows big leave everything and go. Greyson County, where Mt. Rogers is tends to get more snow than most areas in SW VA. According to friends in NW NC they just got 12+ inches so you best stop reading start packing. There is a nice map to the entire area but I can't recall who publishes it, Im sure any decent VA. backpacking store will have one though. The best local weather link is raysweather.com. I think he gets data from Greyson County and updates it daily.

-Jon

Oh man - I totally forgot about Mt. Rogers. My favorite place in the Virginia and North NC mountains! Ive slogged around in snow up to my elbows up there before...

The map is called: Mt. Rogers High Country and Wildnerness. Looks like its published by the USDA/Forest service.Recreation Guide R8-RG 33.

Kam - let me know if you ever head up there and I will let you borrow my map.

Michael
