Cannon Cameras - G12 vs Rebel?
« on: 03/16/12, 04:55 PM »

Does anyone out there use either the Cannon G12 or Cannon Rebel on trips and have feedback?

I have been using Cannon Elphs for years and love the small size, but may go to something more powerful now.

Thanks. Grin

I use a G12 and love it. The sensor isn't any bigger than many cheaper point and shoot digital cameras but it has superior and versatile software and must have better optics because I'm getting much better pictures. The viewfinder is very handy. The small size is nice. I bought mine a year ago and would consider looking at the latest  "four thirds" technology and cameras. I'm not much of a camera buff but these cameras were looking promising, with a much bigger sensor than point and shoots, with a body smaller than dSLRs. A year ago they were expensive and big, but I'll bet some improvements have occurred.

I love my Rebel T2i.  It is smaller than a full size DLSR, shoots relatively quickly for action shots, and has the ability to interchange lenses.  Plus, it shoots HD video.  Definitely the best camera I've owned to date.

Image quality in the G series is great, good enough for 99% of users. Reasons to get the Rebel include: faster frame rate, interchangeable lenses, and ability to get a smaller depth of field. DSLR will certainly be better for action shots, but is the extra weight worth it to you? In my opinion, don't bother with the DSLR unless you're willing to get some decent glass for it though.

I've had a G12 for a year and am overall disappointed its results. The pictures don't look as good as the specs. I would vote for the DSLR with the standard kit lens. The camera I've had the most fun with in the mountains was one of the high zoom Lumix point and shoots.

I like my g12. 4/3 tech will always result in a bigger camera to carry, so if it's worth it go for it. G12 fits in ski jacket pocket, little harder to do with 4/3.

I have a G12 and a 7D with a pack full of zoom lenses.  I bought the Panasonic Lumix LX5 and returned it to get the G12.  My room mate has the Canon S100 and I've played with it a bit.

For my uses and subjects I prefer the G12 for general purpose.  If I wasn't interested in an auxiliary flash then I would opt for the S100 because it does everything the G12 does (through menus instead of dials) but seems to be about 1/2 the size and fits in a pocket so much better.  My G12 always finds a spot in my pack whether it's a slim slackcountry pack or my full touring kit and I have pulled it out in many more places than my 7D.  By the time I have my 7D and 3 lenses in a padded bag it adds ~20lbs to my pack.  I've done long days with it but it's not fun.

I really only had 2 issues with the LX5: I was already familiar with Canon menus and controls and I already had Canon flashes that are compatible with the G series.

There are extension tubes available for the G12 if you want to play with a different field of view than the standard zoom range but you lose image quality.

The G is slow to pick a focus point, slower to change manual controls, and shoots at a slower frame rate than the full size body.  If I'm serious about shooting action (snowboarding and skiing for me) then I take out the big body.  I've I'm trying to document my adventures and shoot a few pictures of rocks, trees, skin tracks, neighboring mountains, etc then I leave the heavy equipment at home.

The small sensor size is also a benefit for shooting landscapes and low light subjects because the depth of field at F/4.0 is much deeper with a small sensor than with a big sensor so I can shoot in low light at F/4.0 at a low ISO and a higher shutter speed for decent images with very forgiving DOF for landscapes.  It makes the artsy, selective focus shots all but impossible though (do it in post if you have to).

If you are considering a G12, also consider the Canon S100 (or its predecessors, S90 and S95).  Same sensor as the G12, smaller lighter package, f 2.0 lens.  See Kent Rockwell: Canon S100:World's Best Pocket Camera

I have a 4/3 and it's a bit too big.
Go small, you'll never leave it behind.

The only thing that would change my mind is a viewfinder, which the G12 has, and that's worth a lot when it's bright, which is half the time on snow!
