Shames March 11th Cold Sweat.
« on: 03/11/12, 09:05 PM »

Weather was better today so PNWBrit( Banned) and I went for a nice long tour.
Toured up to the Dome, a treeless plateau above the ski hill where a lot of big lines start. By the time we got there the weather looked like it was coming in again so we deskinned a dropped a line called North Bowl down into the valley bottom.  Of course as soon as we got to the valley floor the weather improved again so we decided to go over to NoDogs and try to get to Cats again. At the bottom of the skin track we met up with Trevor and his 5-1/2 month pregnant girlfriend, Mary. Trevor had been our server when we stayed the first night in Prince Rupert on our way here and we had started talking about skiing. We found out when we got here that Trevor was "hard core".

Trevor persuaded us to come with them to drop a fairly ambitious line called Cold Sweat. Figuring that if his very pregnant girlfriend was going to ski it...so could we.
She fairly motored up the skin track and PNWBrit( banned) and I right there and then decided we could never ever complain about the extra weight of our avy air bag packs.
The line was commiting and steep and covered in wonderful deep powder. Stability was deemed OK so we dropped it. Our best line of the year.

Mary set off a fairly big sluff as she ripped over a rollover but seemed unperturbed having skied the BC here since she was 12. Trevor was a marvelous skier and Mary particularly was an impressive woman.
We then hiked back to the ski area, got the t-Bar to the top and rode a groomer back to base where celebrations were in effect because ALCan a big local employer had just announced that they were buying the co-op a new cable for the the Lift ( worth $150,000) and contributing a further $50,000 to the co-op.
This place is very special.

Touring up to the Dome with the easy access BC in the background

Our turns down Cold Sweat.

General ambiance from the Dome.

Awesome boys!!
Would love to go there some day, looks spectacular!
Were they able to procure a new lot of squirrels to replace the worn out ones that power the lifts??
Also, is just the mention of PNWBrit( Banned) also frowned upon?

If only they would invent a worldwide interconnection of computers that would allow one to search for this kind of information. Roll Eyes

Sorry for the sarcasm but having spent 4 days on close proximity to PNWBrit(Banned) I couldn't help it.

This is the sort of sick thing that goes through your mind when you are lying in the dark in your snowcave isn't it??

With the only clues as "Prince Rupert", "Cold Sweat", and "Dome" I won't share the Google results.

That is an impressive website!  Especially the 'Routes' pages.  That would never work down here..  apparently.

Nothing like a good roadtrip to reset the spirit.    Thanks for the tour..

Very cool website, I bet that's helped with Shames tourism!

One question: shouldn't this be posted in the lift-accessed section with the other reports?   It seems like you caught a lift for access to the goods...  Wink

I don't know, man,
on the other hand, Shames Mt may be one of the finest backcountry destinations in North America. And after all, the route map has "backcountry" in the link two times.

maybe there should be a sidecountry forum for trips like this.  A forum for trips where you ride the lift and call it backcountry, but still stop in for a latte and cheeseburger between laps   Cool
