Picked up around 25 cms of new snow during the week of 3/4.  Temps stayed cold until Thursday the 8th.

We did a bunch of digging and found the February 8th surface hoar down 95 to 110 cms.  We are still getting results on this layer with both compression tests and extended column tests (which is impressive considering the depth of the weak layer).

Short trip report and video's of some of the snowpack tests can be found here.  http://www.ncmountainguides.com/permalink.asp?id=677#677
Thanks Jeff - were all of those ECT & CT results Q1 shears? They looked pretty 'crisp'. Thanks for raising our awareness a bit.

They were all Quality 1 or as the Canadians would say Sudden Collapse.  No question on the quality.  If you were to trigger this layer on a larger slope it would not be good.

For those of you riding closer to the Canadian border, you might want to look at the Kootenay Boundary forecast. http://www.avalanche.ca/cac/bulletins/latest/kootenay-boundary  They seem to have a more representative forecast for the snowpack we are seeing around WA Pass and Harts Pass.  We are starting to see less skier triggered and natural avalanches on this layer but we believe it's just because it's now buried slightly deeper and more difficult to trigger, not because it is gaining strength.    Be careful out there!
