Just discovered that all 4 volumes of The Snowy Torrents: Avalanche Accidents in the United States are available to read for FREE online at the University of Utah library:

The Snowy Torrents: Avalanche Accidents in the United States, 1910-1966
The Snowy Torrents: Avalanche Accidents in the United States, 1966-1971
The Snowy Torrents: Avalanche Accidents in the United States, 1972-1979
The Snowy Torrents: Avalanche Accidents in the United States, 1980-1986




These books have summaries and analysis of hundreds of notable avalanche accidents. All are long out of print, and the first 3 volumes are hard to find -- but the paper version of volume 4 (1980-86) is still available from CSAC for $20: http://www.avalanche-center.org/store/books-torrents4.php

Various other older books and materials published by the Alta Avalanche Study Center are also available to browse free online at the University of Utah library: http://content.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/altaav
