Anyone have knowledge of cascade river road conditions? I'm excited by this report:
http://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/road-conditions.htm
which says that it's open to milemaker 21, and I believe it's a 23 mile road.... so only a 2 mile skin to the trailhead? Haven't had luck touching base with anyone at the park to verify when that report was updated. Anyone know how far you can drive with an AWD?
thanks Erik

I wish it were true but I've learned to mistrust nps reports. I called the Sedro-W station the other day and was told road was closed after the bridge. N

I don't think you need to mistrust the NPS road report, but you do need to check the date on it. More than likely, the report was accurate as of when it was updated -- unfortunately that was almost 2 months ago! It says "Last Updated: December 12, 2011" at the bottom of the page.

Damn Amar... that is some seriously small and light colored text to have found. thanks.
On a related note, anyone want to sell a snowmobile? I'd like to take it for a test ride first though... perhaps in the Marblemount vicinity.

Erik - I was up CRR on sunday the 12th and I was able to get about 13 miles from TH in a 4WD truck. From there we used a snowmobile to access CJ coulior. I would recommend bringing a chainsaw with you. The group the week before must have spent a couple of hours cutting downfall.

A friend and I are attempting to summit Eldorado Peak. The NPS in Marblemount said there was quite a bit of snow. We plan to skin up as much as we can. But if it's more than 10 miles to skin to the trail head, we may call it off. Any recent reports in the last few weeks of March?

The latest report is from March 8 and says it's "open" to MP21, but I find this hard to believe. Did the NPS say there was "quite a bit of snow" on the road, or were they referring to the alpine? Unless you can cheat (snowmobile), you may be looking at quite a bit of road skinning...
from http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mbs/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5150499:
============ Cascade River Road (15) OPEN 3/8/2012 - Open to mile 21, Johnson's Cabin, two miles before the end of the road. Road is paved to approx. mile 10, then gravel with some potholes and washboards, drivable for low clearance vehicles. Not suitable for large RVs due to steep and narrow sections and sharp switchbacks. Drive slowly, road is narrow.

my better half called the NCNP and Forest Service to get some updated info...figured i'd post it here for y'all. While no one has actually been up there recently, the latest report they have is that the road is blocked at MP 15 and Marblemount just got 3" of snow yesterday, so it could be interesting even getting to MP15. No one she spoke with could say why the website says its open to MP 21 as of March 8th.

The more reliable online road report for this road is (usually) from the NPS (http://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/road-conditions.htm), not the USFS.
The current report dated March 13, 2012, states: "Road is gated at mile 21, Johnson's Cabin, two miles before the Cascade Pass parking lot. Snow level varies and typically blocks passage well before this milepost. As of March 12, some fresh snow on the road beginning at mile 8--watch for icy spots as well. Debris and downed trees on the road, but none block passage to mile 8. No report beyond, but watch for downed trees potentially blocking the road, and new snow. County maintenance usually only as far as mile 7."
Maybe that's not great info, but it's more accurate than the USFS report for sure right now.

I was up there today. Plowed and dry pavement to Lookout Creek. We parked there and walked up the road. Anywhere from 2 feet of snow to dry pavement up to the turn off for Hidden Lake Road, where we stopped. The snow is heaviest around Marble Creek. A couple more weeks of above freezing temps and you should be able to drive past the Hidden Lake Road turnoff. The downed tress have been trimmed enough to get by (at least to Hidden Lake Road).

On 4.8.2012 you could drive to 1/2 mile before the South SIde Cascade river road. After Hard Creek It's little log in about 2' of smashed up snow. Someone's charged the spot with a really big truck. It would take about an hour with a saw and a shovel to get a high clearance car/ truck through this spot. Or wait and it'll melt pretty fast.
We went down the South Side road, so I don't know how far up you can get towards Eldorado etc. Jake
