we slept at the trailhead for about an hour before getting up at 3ish and started hiking to meet some friends who were camped at the base of the coleman. early morning lazies saw us leaving glacier travel gear at the car to lighten the load. turns out it would have been a perfect day to ski off the summit, but no complaints here. we spent all day, from before sunrise, to after the sun went behind heliotrope, skiing 3-4" of light pow over a firm crust. the skiing sounded a bit icy but felt like butter. not quite as good as two weeks ago (oct 13th), but still excellent skiing.

cold temps froze the trail by early morning making the hike out a bit slick. tomorrow looks like it's going be good too, not quite as cold, but cold enough!

Wow! You got the goods!

That looks so good!

Great photos.

turns out it would have been a perfect day to ski off the summit ...

While any sunny & relatively windless day is perfect for skiing off the summit, the snow on Tueday was better down lower.

Chuck, Scott, and I skinned up to ski the north facing slopes near Cofax (below the ice climbs) thinking we’d have more fresh snow. But alas, we still found the noisy rain crust and much of the fresh snow had blown away. As is often the case on that that side of Baker, the skiing was much better down in the Heliotrope area.

Thanks for the use of the picture for the front page, Todd!  Beautiful day y'all had.

from the looks of the first pic, it looks like the fresh is graupel. I skied some 2 seasons ago and it was only 3 inches deep but it packs down perfect
