August 11, 2011, Ingalls Peak to the Lake

On Monday my wife and I climbed the fun popular route on Ingalls Peak and what did we find between the climb and the lake below? 1000' of continuous boot skiing all the way to the lake shore. So of course I played hooky from work (again) on Thursday and went back to ski. Dan and I skied 5 runs in the headlight basin area. We saw one other set of tracks that looked a week old. First three runs were on the slope between The base of the climbing route (South ridge of North Peak) and the lake. Super fun. We actually skied right to the water. On the way back to the pass, we kept our boots on so we could ski the short (400') pitches above the trail. We had enough juice for two runs there. The surface has a sun-cupped appearance, but feels smooth. The corn by noon was 4-5" deep and skied great. Good booting too. The snow stops conveniently AT the trail. Switched back to sneaks for the walk out (Ingalls Pass to Esmerelda Basin TH). Very good skiing for the price of a 3 mile approach. Not bad for August! Left the car at 8:30 a.m. and back to the TH at 4 p.m.
We did Mount Stuart this weekend via the West Ridge and saw your tracks as we rounded the lake. Nice work!
Sorry for the hijack, but was the W Ridge of Stu relatively snow free (especially the approach couloir to LJT)?
We were able to stay off snow in the initial approach gully. The gully crossing to the base on LJT was still very firm frozen snow and we used crampons to cross all 100 feet of it. There might be a bypass on the rock above the gully but we didn't explore. We also used crampons the next day descending the Cascadian just below the false summit, since we had to bivy at 9200'.

Nice! That looks like a fun route. I enjoyed your pictures.
By the way, there is a really fast looking snow machine windshield at the bottom of the ski pitch just above Lake Ingalls in case anyone lost something like that. ;)
