yaa, Lassen put the mountain on the map in the 1850's, when he founded the Emigrant trail. (when driving, there are markers noting the location of the trail). * the snow is "off the measuring chart" & the road seems clear of snow, but the TH parking area looks like a "football field of suncups". as for conditions, the Park service suggest winter mountaineering skills (get that, down here in July). skiin's fantastic w/ mild suncups. the bonus today was the 'snow-slide' by the parking lot or in climbings terms, a glissade path **
Is the road open all the way through the park now?

- driving access is from the south side, to Bumpass hell, & a 20 minute schlep to the TH. Park service has the road closed there to Devastated area. The Park website has all the info.

Sounding GOOD DOWN THERE!

What sort of open slope continous fall line-ish vertical is there to be had (noy including the slog through the woods..)?

Lassen is pretty much always good. The summit is 10,500, the TH is 8,500 so that means direct access to the upper mtn. Another good thing about Lassen; there is a shoulder on the lower mtn trail that offers about 3 different sections(earlier, yields the most snow but holds snow till mid-Aug). * You can also ski the North aspect for about 700 vert and boot back up and do it again. And then you get the turns on the lower mtn, as well( back at the S side). The Park service is doing major repairs on the trail, so there is pretty much no access to the Peak, this summer (when the snow melts). It is a 10 dollar park fee. Large parking area to kick it at! With an avg. snowpack, turns are available to about mid Aug. The catch is you can only access snow via the hiking trail. This yr. turns should be avail. thru Aug, no problem (bumper crop). If you guys go to CA, stop by kinda through the end of July for turns. There are no glaciers on Lassen/ just semi-permanent snowfiields (on big snow yrs.)

There is not much wooded terrain on the S sides; some log-hopping thru the Devastated Area.
If you connect the SE and S faces of Lassen you get a bit over 2000'.  The NE face is still over 3000' from Emigrant Pass (have to access from N still), or about 1500' and then traverse around right to the SE aspect.
For micro-tours, there are several peaks SSW of Lassen that have VERY easy access from the road.  Try Eagle or Ski Heil Peaks, about 1000' each.
