After yesterday's tiring tour, I had plenty of all you can eat spaghetti, meat sauce, and garlic bread at Topaz Casino, bought Nevada price (buck cheaper than Cali) gas, and headed for Monitor Pass to see the sunset and overnight. Today it was on to Carson Pass where the start of the trail to Round Top was not quite skinnable.
Met a fellow in the parking lot who was headed for Kirkwood lifts. I told him I had heard the skiing was unremarkable. His Armada skis had Marker AT bindings and his boots were Dalbello Virus so I suggested he join me. I happened to have a spare pair of skins that fit his skis sort of, and he was stoked to go on his first ski tour. We proceeded slowly as he learned the use of poles and skins. Due to his heart condition we only got one fine corn run on the slopes of Round Top below the Crescent couloir, but it was a nice rest day for me.
