Monday to Wednesday a friend and I skied the Ptarmigan Traverse from Cascade Pass to Spire Point. We parked at the upper gate on Cascade river road; we put on skis at the Cascade Pass trail parking lot and took them off at 3800' on Bachelor Creek. No magic intervened to save us from the 18 mile walk back to our car at the gated end of the Suiattle River road. But man is that trail good for walking!
We experienced a dramatic change in conditions as the high pressure arrived: from scary, isothermic snow Tuesday morning to perfect, firm skinning on a 3 cm supportive crust early Wednesday morning. Snow coverage was excellent on the traverse.
A slightly more thorough trip report can be found here: www.forestmcbrian.com
Cheers!
