Don't tell anyone but I was on call. I needed to pick somewhere that had phone coverage and could get back quickly if called. More importantly I needed a partner who would go with me under these circumstances. Mike Segars filled the billet. Many thanks to him. After four weeks of weekend white out tours and watching weekday skiers score in big fashion, I needed a win.
Mike Segars (I never saw or heard him breathing!) and I climbed up to Hauser peak at Crystal after digging some pits qt15 and rutschblock 4. 3 " fresh, snowing and obscured/weak sun . It was kinda on the bubble after the previous days rain got down under a crust at 8". 38degree slope. We hemmed and hawed but finally continued up in conservative mode.Skinned in close to the trees and finally made it. Skiing down I was releasing slush slides that ran until they hit trees.
We stuck with our agreed upon tactics to stay close to trees so we could dart in if anything happened. All was well and it was great to get in a good ski with visibility even if the snow was mushy.it snowed all day and snowing a little heavier as we left.
Oh yes stevens canyon road is open all the through to hwy 123 . Round the mountian tourbuses were at Wapiti Woolie. Which made Bob and Debbie happy.
