Jack and I exchanged mail pondering whether to hike or ski Saturday. We decided to ski, and picked a tour that had a variety of exit options to choose from depending on what shade of gruesome we'd find the snow to be.
Thankfully it was snowing at highway level as we started away from the bumper. It was one of those days where even on the skin up we didn't realize how fun the ski down was going to be. In the trees up above 5K-ish we found nice spring powder. We stayed out of clearings up there as they were all crusty crap with snowball snow on top. Below that zone, the open slopes were quite fun despite being heavy wet snow, whereas the woods presented firm-ish tree peed/bombed crust. Any near surface crusts were well melted as we skied down. Where we'd expected survival skiing, we were getting bouncy deep wet snow turns. Modern skis rock!! What had been snow at the highway in the morning was drizzly rain as we returned to the bumper, but we only had to endure a brief time in the rain zone. We stayed off big steep stuff. Nothing was wanting to slide in the upper layers.
Great fun, and good exercise, but no pics today. Mankineers unite!
