OK, we all know the Methow is all about X-C skiing but I was desperate to get out into the backcountry. Very little snow had fallen for almost 2 months, the slopes on Lewis Butte and Cougar Mountain were showing a lot of rocks on the south faces. We heard rumors that about 5 inches of new snow had fallen in the mountains north of the valley floor so we waited a day for a little more snow from the front that came through this week then went to explore the north side of Cougar Mountain.
Climbing up the south ridge with 4 inches of light snow over bare rock and scrub, I began to wonder if my wife would ever go backcountry skiing with me again. I had assured her the snow would be just fine over the north ridge.
Here was the result:
Nope, its Cougar Mountain right off Gunn Ranch Road just off Rendezvous Rd outside of Winthrop.
More like front-country skiing its so close to civilization.
