Feb 19, 2011, Red Mountain

Tim and I followed a well worn skin track through Commonwealth and up to the col below the face of Red. There were a number of groups out in the area, and many choose to go towards Lundin. We followed a group of two up the face of Red, and skinning proved difficult. Most parts were fine, but certain points had little snow to grab on to. We all ended up booting the top half, but with ski crampons it would have been fine.

Ski conditions were pretty good, although I was never able to fully trust the next turn. There was some sun effected snow, but not too much of a crust.  It looked like a  number of people had skied it a day or two before, and their turns were crusted up. At the very bottom of the face, there was great snow hidden in the trees.  Col down to the valley floor was wet and heavy snow. North Facing aspects are the way to go right now...
