Really I think that we are getting worked up for something that more than likely will not ever happen. But, as I mentioned since the proper channels were addressed at the time of request for input, Crystal Could, but probably won't use the card that East Peak expansion is necessary due to increased load of skiers.
The Bullion Basin chair will be handy enough at this time to tour higher to East Peak and Bullion. There will be a remarkable increase of traffic up East Peak just from that alone. I can see the skin track from 100 skiers now. If I was Crystal, I would forget East Peak Chair and focus the tour program that they are touting on their website to accommodate their tour groups. They can start from the top of the Bullion Basin Chair.  Plenty of terrain to tour to from there. No offense purists, it's just going to happen.
Maybe develop a SnoPark area lower on the boulevard by the summer access road to Goldhills. That is where all the tour skiers can start from to access the terrain.

We've met several times.

Well, hopefully I'll see you on the slopes or in the elk soon, whoever you are, and maybe I'll read George Price over the weekend so we can talk about it in person lol Grin.

I blame all this on two things John Muir and tribalism.
I blame John Muir for the Wilderness cult in N. America. He's a fellow Scot but I'd wish he'd just stayed at home ( as I'm sure you wish I had..... beat you to it). The population is growing and people want healthy recreation and skiing is one of them. Ski areas need to expand to accommodate that need. Some wilderness needs to be protected but really... Crystal Ski Area and the lovely clear cuts on the scenic drive there?HuhHuh
They have it right in Europe( because they sent Muir over here) with ski areas everywhere and great access for both those that like piste and off -piste skiing and ski mountaineering.
WA has mountains that nearly rival the Alps IMHO  but the access just sucks ( unless ,it will be pointed out, you are some uber rad ski tourer willing to put up with incredible hardship to reach the area........ but isn't that an elitist response)
We need new access points, better winter access into our national parks in WA. A hut system that allows high level traverses and multi-day ski mountaineering trips in various parts of the state. Expansion of ski areas to spread the crowds and make the  resort skiing experience better.
In the meantime we lock more an more of it up and then wonder why Americans and their kids get fatter and fatter and die earlier compared to the other developed countries and  we now have to run ads on TV to tell American kids to get some exercise every day.

Tribalism... don't get me started..... the scourge of Africa( I spent 5 years there.. I know)
Are  you a BC skier or a resort skier or are you a hybrid?? I am only BC and never use lifts so my tribe is better...... No I am a resort skier and you BC skiers are pinko's... my tribe is better. Idiotic.
I'm a skier, I like BC and lift skiing and sidecountry and slashcountry and ski mountaineering and heli skiing and snowmobile assist skiing and XC skiing. We're all susceptible to it and I'm very guilty in that regard. Nearly every BC skier I have met( well at least the ones that could ski) have spent a lot of time in the resorts.

Crystal needs and I have NO doubt will provide free and safe access for those wishing to access the BC from the Crystal base or from the top of the lifts not because they have to ( which they may) but because it will be good for skiing in general. So would better winter access to our mountains as people are getting squashed and together and as lab studies show... when you put too many rats together they start eating one another.

As a Scot I apologize on behalf of my country for sending John Muir over here. It's F@@cked you up it has.( I'm sure somebody will apologize for sending me here as well.... beat you to it again!)
Time to play catch up and do something about it .... or control population growth.

You guys need to get out more and lay off the internet, this kind of heat does little to improve skiing etiquette.

To avoid problems with backcountry users skinning up on runs I propose a uphill only trail be cut thru the woods, perhaps in the general area I've marked in red on Lowell's image. It wouldn't need any surface work, only clearing of trees and brush,  and only a few feet wide would be enough as it would be up only. Ideally the Forest Service would mark and build it, but a more realistic and timely method would be for TAYers to do the cutting.

Seems like there is an obvious major problem with this idea: some lift skiers seeking powder in the trees are almost certain to ski down any such trail, even just portions of it connecting larger clearings.  The narrow width (if cut through tight trees or brush) will likely lead to sudden unavoidable accidents.

Personally, at an operating ski area, I'd much rather skin up the edge of a wide open trail, and would avoid going anywhere near a narrow trail up through the woods.

Since there is already a designated hiking/pack trail that is maintained by the forest service right through that area it seems unlikely that the FS would approve an additional trail.   The grade of hiking/pack trail is set for horse packing somewhat less steep than ideal for skinning.

Agree with Amar that skinning up the edge of regular ski run is safer.

One example of that is the "Serpentine" run at the Summit Nordic center -- it was cut as a narrow winding XC trail a few years ago with the idea of providing a more gentle descent route for XC skiers from the "upper trails" back to the base -- unfortunately snowboarders discovered that it made fun "toboggan run" / "banked slalom" -- freaking out the novice XC skiers for which the trail was intended.    Now XC skiiers are channelled onto the nearby "Creek Run" than has been widened a bit.

The steath option is to skin directly up through the forest -- when the snowpack is above 50 inches or so the brush and creeks are covered enough that this is pretty easy -- but the trees are tight enough to discourage descending powder seekers that didn't learn to ski in Vermont.

I'm adding a cross-link to a thread about a March 2011 avalanche that crossed the northernmost run in the Bullion Basin footprint.

http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=20203.msg85838#msg85838

This suggests that the new Bullion Basin lift, if Crystal Mountain builds it, may require closures and or control work to protect this run, assuming that it remains part of the development plan.

Thanks for the info Gary!
