Nov. 27, 2010 Summit West
« on: 11/27/10, 02:41 PM »

Jill needed to test her new hip and I needed to see how things were working after a few surgeries this Fall.  We only skied for an hour and a half but it felt great to be moving on snow again.

Here's the important stuff.  The lifts officially open at 9am but they were loading butts at 8:30.  Coverage is quite good on the groomers.  There are some holes and ridges between groomed and ungroomed terrain.  The holes were being marked by ski patrol as we arrived.  All the chairs including Wildside were operating.  Surface conditions were packed powder.  The base on the groomers seems solid  with minor vegetation poking through.  The skies were fairly clear during our brief visit and the sun peaked through for awhile.

The I-90 Crossover was not blocked off from Wildside so my buddy and I went over to Central to get some powder from below Triple Sixty. Good stuff and well worth the returning walks.

Great to hear your gal is up and making turns.  Always feels good to get back up and moving after being layed up.   Smiley

11/25/10 – First PC chair was ours at West for opening day.  (shared with MiguelMasLoco, who was waiting up front too.)  Played around for 6 runs on the groomed because off-piste was still on the low cover side for us with two regular-width sticks (one plankers were having fun.)  Got out there for a few turns, but with lots of twigs still showing…  Also scored first chair when they opened up Dodge Ridge around 10.  Had to split for family obligations at 10:30, and the crowd was lookin’ healthy with short waits at all the lifts.  Heard Central may open next weekend after the next front drops another 15 inches or so.  Heard lots of blasting going off across the freeway at Alpy.  TomK & Kerry
11/27/10 – West was fairly enjoyable this morning.  Latest snow was 2-3” over heavy NW crude, so it was a case of Bumps, & Dimples, & Divots, Oh My!  Had to keep the speed down and not let ‘em run away and buck you off.  PC, Dodge Ridge, and Wildside lifts were rolling, and Little Thunder had the best grooming with flatness afoot.  Temps started out in the high 20’s,  hit mid 30’s by 10:30.  TomK & Kerry.
11/28/10 – Watch out for Wapiti!  Spotted a dozen elk chowing down at the Edgewick exit onramp during the ride up.  Lifts had been rolling for 5 minutes or so when we got to the PC at 0835.  Cloudy with occasional sun-holes and 4-6 inches of new made for a very nice morning.  Temps ran from upper 20’s to just about 30 F with the next stormfront rolled in about 1030 bringing fog and snow to the hill.  Julies, PC, Dodge, Little T, and Wildside lifts were loading.  Cover out in the open brush fields was good enough to shred up, so the season is off to a good start.  TomK & Kerry

I've seen it plenty worse.  The cat track or whatever that goes from the top to the bottom was converted to a rock slab by mid afternoon.  Thunderbird was brushy and bumpy but had some nice soft deep snow on the bottom left of the run.  Had.  Not so much there now (and no apologies).  On the front side it was pretty gross looking under the lift but under the old lift towers was surprisingly nice.  Just a few rock points here and there.  I'd still like to see another many+ feet hit the place.
