Late Start, started skinning from Hyak base at 10:30. Got three runs on the backside in somewhat heavy boot-top powder, up to half a pole on the way up. No rocks but found a few buried tree/branch obstacles. The snow was very fun with broken clouds and not too crowded.
They were working on the lift and talking about tensioning the haul cable. It was hanging down between the towers and partially buried in the snow. Be sure to check in with them if you are skiing near the lift towers. The crews were all super friendly despite working under pressure in adverse conditions.
I left about 2:00 and the snow hadn't made it to Hyak. There was heavy snow on the way back, just west of the summit. Sorry, no camera.

so the backside was pretty well filled in? Have they done any clearing of the new run they cut last year?
we got up late on sunday, got to hyak about 2. did a couple frontside laps before dark. lots of people out, including the booters in the skin track (always a crowd favorite)
coverage was pretty minimal, i was surprised to see patches of gravel slope out up 3/4 of the way on the face. But the snow skied well and had more base to it than i expected. The early season pillow lines were in full effect, and the landings were soft and deep!
better than skiing 8-mi road like we did on saturday...

The backside is filled in enough to be fun skiing, but that new run they "mowed" is still a stump farm underneath the surface snow. I can't say I really exercised the needed caution when skiing it yesterday, but in hindsight I'd recommend being careful as I did narrowly avoid hitting a few stumps at high speed. :) If you are back there in flat lighting, do watch out for the plethora of cat tracks they have zig zagged across the backside. There was only 1 when I skied down in the morning, but by the afternoon they had put in a few more, presumably for doing work on that chairlift.
