A nicer-than-expected outing. My son Zach convinced two of his buddies to get touring gear. This was my first backcountry outing with the trio of 17 year olds.
We arrived at about 11AM to 34 degrees and heavy snow. There was about 4 inches of heavy fresh snow below and abou 6 inches of lighter snow up in Pineapple Basin. Nice skinning out the lake and up through No Fog.
The new snow was well bonded to the saturated goo below. Two compression tests at the top of No Fog yielded 23Q3 and 24Q3.
The skiing was very nice down from Pineapple Pass through the basin. Back down in No Fog it was pretty sloppy. It skied smoothly, but everything behind you turned to saturated goo. We dubbed it "single use snow".
The boys had fun with the terrain features in the trees. Here's one photo of Zach hopping a pillow line and one of Nick after a less-than-successful hop.
