Suggested Avy Courses? was created by bart
There are plenty of level 1 avy courses in the area, so which one do i pick? in your experience, which is best? cheapest? Some span more time, but some are over in a weekend. Any suggestions or good/bad experiences with a  certain group?

Thanks all.

Years ago I went through REI with Gary Brill . Last I heard he was with Mountain Madness. Great classroom material, Excellent field day: snow analysis, route planning, beacon exercises, etc...
Good Luck!

AIARE gets my vote. Depending on where you're at, the Everett Mountaineers put on a very good program, 3 lectures and a 2 day field trip at Mt Baker. You're a bit too late this season though, lecture 2 is tonight.

As long as you stick to a AIARE approved course the material for level 1 should be pretty similar from any instructor. I'd definitely recommend you take the class from a AIARE approved instructor:

Smaller student:instructor ratios and more field time are good things to look for...

Jerry Haugen and company - mountaineers three years ago or so had a nice little avi I class. I thought their field trip and dig out drills were great.

2dn this -- I took Jerry's class last season and it was great -- I really got a lot out of the field days -- particularly the "simulation" on the second day.

I got a lot more from it than from the Gary Brill class I had the year before.

I agree. My daughter and I took the Avy 1 class last year and Martin and his guides were great. We had very adverse weather with the pass being closed and all and he rescheduled and accommodated everyone. The class is held up at Alpental so you get some real good exposure to avalanche terrain.

I think there is still room in the Jan class. Check it out here and give Martin a call.
