Kevin said we had to get in our trip to SR 20 before all the snow was gone, so we did. After a 12:30 PM start due to my working late the night before, we arrived at the Blue Lake Trailhead around 4:00, under warm spring skies. Immediately set off to tour up to Blue Lake, following several sets of skin tracks from earlier in the day - soft corn, perfect skinning traction, and sun! The turns down to the lake were smooth and perfect, but as we skinned up from the lake the snow on the western aspects of the cirque were turning to mush. Made an on-the-spot decision to check out the couloir just south of the lake which was in the shade and had a northern exposure - the snow seemed good, about 6-8" of fresh over some frozen avy debris. Could only skin about 1/3 the way up the couloir, switching to boots/crampons for the remainder, with the middle averaging about 45 degrees and the top in the upper 40's. The skiing was pretty cool; what looked like an awkward off-camber run actually had a decent fall line and good turns were had. Quite a bit of sloughing of the new snow, but the underlayer held firm.

Day two began under heavy snowfall, but the skies began to clear during the oatmeal course, so we continued with our plans to do the Birthday Tour - skinning up was a bit tricky on the thin fresh layer over hard-frozen base until we hit the South Early Winters Spire; the section above that was through about 10" of untracked fresh and would probably have been the best skiing of the trip, but we were going up. The last 200 ft. or so needed to be booted, but were straighforward.

Skiing on the mellow, east-facing backside was a treat, huge bowls of untracked with conditions ranging from windpacked pow to perfect sun-softened corn at the bottom. The barometric pressure dropped like a rock and heavy snow started to fall as we began the skin back up the bowl to the north, but it went pretty quickly.

The final ski down to US 20 through the burned-out trees was great, about 12" of fresh over a frozen corn base at top, a little less below. The ski out through the trees at the bottom was marred by numerous frozen snomobile tracks, but getting a ride back to the Blue Lake Trailhead about 30 seconds after arriving at the road made up for it.

Great report, Greg.
Sounds like your timing was perfect.
Keep up the good work!!  8)

We did the BD tour on Sunday in conditions that were much more spring-like - cool that you got some fresh stuff in the couple of days inbetween.  Since none of us had been there before, so we did the version going over Copper Pass & around to Kangaroo Pass.

Sounds like the last run down you got might make the shorter version the preferred option. Have you gone the other way? Any comments on the 2 finishes?

Russ: This was my first time to do the Birthday Tour, although Kevin was familiar with it, so can't compare the two.

We too, went over Copper Pass, and then hung a left to get in the appropriate drainage down to the hairpin.  I think another nice option would be to start at the hairpin, and to do the tour in reverse with a finish back to the car via the main col just above liberty bell. Kevin

Russ -- yes, Greg's shortcut saves a lot of time. And the time avoided is mostly South facing sidehilling.  Grusome.

Khyak -- the disadvantage of doing the Birthday Tour backwards (yadhtrib rout?) is that you have more elevation gain and you are climbing up the best skiing slopes.

As Tim says, skipping the Copper Pass option saves some time and distance without sacrificing much.  The run south out of Copper Pass is a nice, moderate pitch, but nothing terribly special.  It's worth noticing that the further down you ski that run, the less south-facing sidehillling involved in heading back towards Kangaroo Pass.  You can always take the Copper Pass option, then climb above Kangaroo Pass to the col before skiing out to the hairpin, thereby including the best of both variations.

I've wanted to do the tour in reverse, but no one ever wants to go with me.  The elevation gain is the same (appearances to the contrary, you start and end around 5200 no matter how you work it), but by reversing direction you can finish with a 2400 ft. shot from Blue Lake Col right down Spire Gully to your car door at the hairpin.

I was with a group who did the 'abbreviated' b-day tour on sunday and we all agreed that the shorter finish skipping Copper and Kangaroo passes was a great way to go. We'd done both tour routes before and the shortened version does provide a better run to the highway...and gives you more time to yoyo some of the better slopes along the way if you've got the energy and time.
