Snowmobiles Where They Shouldn't Be- Documentation was created by Charles
The purpose of this thread is to gather in one place first hand observations of snowmobiles where they shouldn't be.

If you would like to make a post on this topic which is not a first hand observation, please
use this thread
.

The most obvious example of where snowmobiles shouldn't be is within a federal Wilderness Area; since Wilderness Area boundaries often follow major topological features, with a map it is usually easy to determine if the snowmobile was within a Wilderness Area. It may be worthwhile to document other types of places where snowmobiles shouldn't be, such as "voluntary closure" areas and non-Wilderness Area land which is classified as closed to snowmobiles (in these cases, try to include info about the nature of the closure).

The more specifics you can add to your observation, the better. In addition to the date and time of the observation, an accurate description of the location is very important, and this might include references to:
--named features on topo maps (peaks, streams, ridges)
--Wilderness Area boundaries
--elevation
--trails
--roads
--why you think the snowmobile should not have been there

If your observation is of a "live" snowmobile, in addition to location, date, and time, you might have information on:
--snowmobile description (make, color, ID number)
--driver description (suit color, helmet color)
--number of snowmobiles
--the route used to access the location
--photos of the action

If your observation is of snowmobile tracks, in addition to location, date, and time, you might have information on:
--number of snowmobiles
--the route used to access the location
--photos of the tracks

The usual rule of one photo/thread is suspended for this thread! Whenever possible, try to include a photo with each observation, and more than one if necessary. For readibility purposes, it would be best to keep the maximum width at 600 pixels or below (with an outside link for a larger version, if available).

To get things started, here are some of my observations of snowmobiles where they shouldn't be (I will edit this to include more details when I get a chance):

Mt. Adams Wilderness Area, June ?, 2001
Type of observation: snowmobile tracks (aged).
Location: left FS 2329? at Divide Camp trailhead and went southward across Wilderness Area boundary; followed route of Divide Camp trail to intersection with Round the Mountain Trail, then diverged above treeline. Tracks seen up to ~8000' on Pinnacle Glacier.
Other info: multiple tracks
Photo: none

Mt.
