Warren Miller is an icon and a hero.
But now his name is just a trademarked brand owned by an international publishing conglomerate it has nothing to do with him....
Far better to support a ski movie that supports skiing and skiers rather than just sees them as a target audience. They're far better movies too.

Despite the dizzying presence of sponsorship, these film are made by skiers for skiers and have become an annual tradition for many of us. Scott Schmidt, Glen Plake, Mike Hatrup, neon and VHS is how I came up. WM movies come to my neighborhood when other films do not, they often feature our local ski areas alongside remote locals, and in recent years they have handed out granola bars.
Besides, isn't the pool big enough to accommodate many ski movies? Would the industry be what it is today with out Warren?
I doubt that it will be the must see ski flick of the season, but did somebody mention free lit tickets?

I'm anxious to see Crystal in the film.
But not as anxious as I was to ski where they'd closed terrain for filming.

It might not be the 18th but I plan on attending at least one of your NB shows. I heard a rumor about Banff Mountain Film Festival? That'd be cool heh?. Be especially nice not to have to rope up and wear full length gaitors to the normal showing at The Mountaineers HQ.

Corporate ski movies are far better than the dreaded romantic comedy. I plan to take my wife, buy her some drinks and lay claim to her ticket vouchers.

Just for the record my good friend.
Although we have all grown up with Mr. Miller and luv him, the company that produces the latest Warren Miller film has no longer any involvement with Mr. Miller. He sold the company to his son many years ago and then his son sold the company to a magazine conglomerate called Bonnier I think that publishes Ski magazine and about another 20 magazines with such diverse titles as Parenting and Motor Boating. The dreaded SKI ( not to be confused with SKiing) magazine is decidedly unTAY and is the one with all the ads for condos and usually has some breathless gushing article about " Debbie and Bill's 45,000 sf dream second home in Deer Park" that has been decorated in western kitsch and boasts about the fact that they can ski out the door to delight in the glorious corduroy that the staff have prepared for them overnight and the small dinner party they are looking forward too with grilled Peruvian rabbit stuffed with Mediterranean olives and a nice chianti.Pukkke : I of course never buy it, just leaf through it when picking up my copies of Environmental Warrior and Socialist Skier from the local bookshoppe.
The gossip is that he has fallen out with his son as a result and hates the direction WME is taking and that his name is still associated with it.
The Warren we love has no connection with WME other than he sold the rights to his name .
I met him once ( name dropper)when my company contributed to a skate board park he was trying to build.
He built a skate board park on Orcas Island I believe for the benefit of the local kids.
Very cool dude but make no mistake, the latest WME offering has no connection with Warren other than it is a ski movie.
Despite never missing a WME movie in the past I will be voting with my wallet this year and NOT going as the behavior of WME in trying to get an injunction to prevent the screening of the level1 film on the eve of it's showing was just too nasty even for my capitalistic values.
However, if you score any good swag I'll still expect you to share! ;D

CRYSTAL PAID WARREN MILLER TO FILM THERE!!!!
Reportedly the first and so far only ski area that had to pay WME to film there. Pretty weak sauce in my honest opinion. Ultimate product placement. Yet another reason to pass on WM this year. And laugh at the weak management of crystal mountain.
HAHAHA!

I am skeptical that they are the "ONLY" area to do this, but I agree with the rest of your analysis.
Steven's had some great footage in the new TGR movie where the mountain built some monster gap jumps for the pro's once the mountain closed. This is the way to engage a film company...offer them access, authorize them to do what ever they want, and encourage them to take their heli's into the surrounding peaks so you don't piss off "the public." If you watch how many movies filmed "at Whister" you'll soon realize that "Whistler" means the somewhere between Blackcomb and Pemberton.

As far as Warren Miller goes, those that haven't should check out the book "Wine, Women, Warren & Skis" that he wrote about him and a friend ski bumming in a tiny trailer at Sun Valley in '46 or '47. Highly reccommended.
btw - when WME came to Alpental in '98-'99 they closed off some delicious terrain on a nice day as well.

I like those parts too. More ski movies is better than fewer ski movies. I don't get the WME hate. If TGR or Powderwhores start getting national distribution deals will their stuff start sucking? I doubt it.I suppose corporate ski movies do suck, except for the parts where they ski sick deep and the parts where they launch massive airs. I like those parts.

Thank god you're not my doctor.

They will if all the athletes have to suck down Oats 'n Honey (tm) before, during and after their segments.

The WM film, despite what's on the screen, is for me an annual ski tradition. I have the photos of my son and I that they take every year at the Pantages--from little squirt to teenager now taller than I.
The excitement over the impending (or in some years just started) ski season is palpable in the crowd. I really dig that I am in a room with hundreds of people who care about skiing so deeply.
I get to see keith rollins and the rest of the Sturt's crew and touch bases with skiers I haven't seen since last season.
Hope to see some of you there...

For those that want something a little closer to WM's roots, the PowderWhore crew is showing Flakes at Evo in Fremont tomorrow night. Looks pretty good and it's usually a good crowd, with good shwag. There's also the Sweetgrass Productions show in North Bend this week, I think.

So, now we go see the smaller companies productions. A new tradition is being born and the level of stoke is at least as palpable if not more so at these screenings. My kids also seem to feel like these movies are a bit more relevant to their ski experience (for better or worse). And there are fewer geezers like me in the crowd even though the films are full of stuff that even geezers can appreciate.
I must say I also like the fact that I can buy the tickets at Evo and not be subject to Ticketmaster's usury where a $20 ticket suddenly becomes over $30 vs. a $15 ticket being just that. Then there's the lawsuit business which was just pathetic.
I'd like to hope that perhaps WME will somehow find the soul they seem to have misplaced for many of us, and that we can once again enjoy their work.

SEATTLE, WA. (October 13, 2009) – For so many of you who may not already know, I would like to clarify that I am not, nor have I been involved with Warren Miller Entertainment (WME) or their ski movies for quite some time now. When I sold the company to my son in 1988, I was excited about staying involved and helping carry the company forward. However, the company has twice since been sold, and it has been six years since I have had anything whatsoever to do with the films bearing my name.
The lawsuit that WME has filed against Josh Berman and Level 1 Productions is something that never should have happened. WME has no valid claim for Trademark Infringement, and that is why they are attempting to delay the action with Level 1 and go to arbitration with me. The judge will rule on the stay of action sometime this week. For Josh and Level 1, a stay of action only means that WME gets to put off their lawsuit, until the arbitration between them and me is finished. That is unacceptable as it leaves Josh and Level 1 hanging in the wind.
I stopped working with WME because our ideas on what the ski films should be weren’t on the same page, and they demonstrated that they didn’t want my involvement in making ski films any longer. WME’s statement that they “would like nothing better than to have Mr. Miller be a continuing part of WME,” but cannot because they are “a small company with limited resources and we are not in a position to meet the financial conditions Mr. Miller requires” is really absurd.
I have never made ski films solely for the money. I have always done what I do out of my love for skiing, passion for people, and the freedom that I find while on the mountain. I sat down and did an interview with Josh, a friend whose entire company, Level 1 Productions, generated less than $100,000 in revenue in 2008. While on the other hand, WME is the largest company of its kind in the world and is part of a multi-million dollar corporation, which is owned by a larger global conglomerate that posted more than a billion dollars in revenue in 2008.
I am really flattered by how much support so many people have shown not only to me, but also to Josh and Level 1 Productions. Thank you for reading this. Let’s all look forward to bluebird days and untracked powder snow!

Since no one has mentioned it, I'll confess that for me the WM film is not just about seeing a movie.

Agreed. To each his own, though. And isn't skiing just about the least "corporate" industry out there? I don't really mind selling out a bit to reach a larger audience. I love skiing and I'd like to share that love with as many folks as possible. Perhaps the art suffers a bit, but there's still Matchstick and TGR. You can have it both ways if you just go to different movies.
