- their Avalanche show, had a feature of the avalanche on Stevens Pass in 1923. It ocurred due to a 'rain event'. It destroyed the trains, which were at a standstill. There were something like 20 survivors and 90 people killed.
Actually it was 1910 I believe. The ordeal started on February 25 when the Number 25 stalled on the west side of the Cascade Tunnel. On March 1 an huge avalanche (1,000 feet wide) hit the train and threw it into the Tye Canyon. 101 victims and 17 survivors. Cf Beckey's Range of Glaciers, page 269. Beckey says in his narrative that for the 6 days there was "unabated snowfall."

It's also a pretty short hike to the spot where Wellington used to be. A nice easy through hike is from stevens pass down to the iron goat parking(cascade powder cats), and then shuttle back to the car at the top of the pass. Some tunnels and snow sheds along the way.

Read "the White Cascade" by Gary Krist. Kind of a documenatry of a book, but not a boring read.

Really top notch reviews of the book (Washington Post) with info at the Amazon website...

the show also had Bridger Bowl ski area. They use a howitzer - cannon for Av. Control. I thought I read somewhere - that where I am,Tahoe area, that Mammoth and Alpine Mdws were the only ski areas with the howitzer.
It also featured snowmobilers and their high marking, high lining, is putting them in avalanche zones.
It is a well done show.
